The back story

The hotels of Tel Aviv, from Jaffa’s old walls to the promenade

Tel Aviv’s hotels follow the shore. In Jaffa, The Setai occupies Ottoman buildings on Clock Square that the hotel says rise on the remains of a Crusader fortress, and The Jaffa fills a 19th-century neo-Renaissance building restored by John Pawson with Rami Gil. Between the two cities, The Drisco has brought the 1866 hotel of the American–German Colony back to life.

In the White City, The Norman and Hotel Montefiore keep the scale of the 1920s streets; along HaYarkon Street the great towers of the promenade, from the Dan, the city’s first luxury hotel in its own words, to the Kempinski, look straight out to sea.

In Jaffa

The Setai Tel Aviv on Clock Square, in the former Jaffa police station; The Jaffa, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in a restored neo-Renaissance building; and Bazaar, a Mandate-era Bauhaus exhibition hall on Jerusalem Boulevard.

Between Jaffa and the White City

The Drisco in the American–German Colony, a Relais & Châteaux house since 2023; the InterContinental David on Kaufman Street, by Neve Tzedek.

In the White City

The Norman on Nachmani Street, Hotel Montefiore, Bachar House on Nahalat Binyamin, and The George, fourteen floors over East Montefiore.

On the promenade

The Royal Beach, the Carlton, the Dan, the Sheraton Grand, The David Kempinski, Brown Beach House and the Hilton in Independence Park.

Stay in Jaffa or the White City for the streets, on the promenade for the sea.

Dizengoff and the Old North

Hotel Reception on Dizengoff Square, Isrotel’s Dizengoff 99 and the Mendeli Street Hotel near the beach.

Our advice: ask for a sea-facing room on the promenade, and a room over the street in the White City; they are different cities.
